About the Original
Lady with an Ermine (c. 1489–1490) portrays Cecilia Gallerani, mistress of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. Leonardo captures her in a three-quarter turn — a then-revolutionary composition that creates a sense of life and movement. The white ermine she holds is a symbol of purity and may be a pun on her name (galé = weasel in Greek). It is one of only four portraits of women attributed to Leonardo.
